Penultimate Penns Grove

A NJ Italian American Community

Pitman Street is located in the Borough of Penns Grove, a town of about 5000 individuals. Penns Grove is a southern New Jersey town well known for the great pride and industrial spirit of it hardworking inhabitants. According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of just less than one square mile, all of it land. Penns Grove borders Carneys Point Township and the Delaware River. Penns Grove is known in many countries outside of the USA. For example, there is an interesting listing written in Italian on the Wikitravel Website.

The westernmost end of Pitman Street is famous for its commanding view of Wilmington, Delaware and nearby locations on the enchanting Delaware River. Plans are in the making for an exciting River Walk to be constructed on this very river bank. The residents of Pitman Street have voiced their near unanimous support of this exciting project.
At the easternmost end of Pitman Street is a graveyard.
Many people believe that East Pitman Street is the more lovely of the two ends of this exquisite roadway.
Unmoved, the residents of West Pitman Street vociferously protest this claim. They point out that it is the western end of this lovely byway that best exemplifies the beautiful surroundings and gracious living that residents of both areas have come to know and appreciate. The traveler fortunate enough to patronize this pulchritudinous purlieu will need to experience both the east and the west ends, not an undaunting endeavor, before weighing in on this salient point of debate so important to the denizens lucky enough to reside in either beloved location.
Many residents of Pitman Sreet once worshiped at the Saint James Roman Catholic Church which can be found a few blocks to the south. Over the years the church has had close ties with Madonna delle Grazie, a church in Teramo, a provincial capital in Italy’s Abruzzo Region. The statue of the Madonna in Saint James was brought to Penns Grove from Italy in 1925 by the residents of Pitman Street. It is an exact copy of statue in Teramo. Each year many scores of travelers come to Penns Grove to worship here.
Many people from Italy, especially the small village of Valle San Giovanni, emigrated to Penns Grove, NJ in the early 1900’s. A good number lived on Pitman Street and worked at the local E.I. DuPont de Nemours plant in Carneys Point. Among the first were members of the Montagnoli and Clemente families. An association called the Italian American Citizens League was formed to assist and support them in their new life in America.
